Creative Process

Building an identity without inventing a face

The title sequence for IL MOSTRO begins with an object, a gesture and a paper cut-out.

Before any animation there is a real object: a blade, printed paper, letters cut out one by one. The gesture of composing words with tweezers is already the title sequence, before it becomes an image.

From the handheld test the work moves to camera: monitor, lenses, light. The same gesture is repeated until it becomes a coherent visual system, where the material of the news story - magazines, cut-outs, dust - builds the world of the narrative.

The final title is the last step of that progression: no added effect, only the consequence of what was built by hand.
